Jason Russell, the co-founder of Invisible Children and father of the five-year-old who featured in the viral KONY 2012 video, was detained in San Diego last night for "being drunk in public and masturbating," NBC San Diego reports. I know. I know.

He was, apparently, possibly, on something? Drugs, I guess? That's him on the right in the photo above. (Next to Ryan Scary Spice.)

Jason Russell, 33, was taken into custody after he was found masturbating in public, vandalizing cars and possibly under the influence of something, according to Lt. Andra Brown. He was detained at the intersection of Ingraham Street and Riviera Road.

I don't know, man. I don't know. It's unclear whether or not he was wearing a KONY 2012 shirt, or what he was masturbating to. We will update this post as this amazing story develops.

Update 1

Gawker writer Maureen O'Connor provides us with this helpful Jason Russell GIF, via this video.

Update 2
San Diegans weigh in:

Update 3: TMZ has more information:

Sources tell us ... Russell was dancing around the Intersection of Ingraham and Riviera wearing "speedo-like underwear" ... and eventually removed the underwear and began to make sexual gestures.

So does NBC San Diego:

Police said they received several calls yesterday at 11:30 a.m. of a man in various stages of undress, running through traffic and screaming. Police described him as "in his underwear."

Update 4: Invisible Children has released a statement:

"Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition. He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday. Jason's passion and his work have done so much to help so many, and we are devastated to see him dealing with this personal health issue. We will always love and support Jason, and we ask that you give his entire family privacy during this difficult time."

Update 5: More from TMZ:

Law enforcement sources tell us ... Russell is being hospitalized on a 5150 psychiatric hold so authorities can assess his mental state. The 5150 hold allows authorities to keep Russell for up to 3 days to determine if he represents a threat to either himself or others.

That's the same hold that was used on Britney Spears.

Update 6: Aaaaaand there's video.

Update 7: We've updated the photo used with this post following a request from Ben McKenzie's publicist.

Update 8: via NBC San Diego, "SDPD Lt. Andra Brown discusses the incident in Pacific Beach March 15, 2012." You know which incident. The masturbation incident.

Update 9: Here's official comment from Danica Russell, Jason's wife, on behalf of their entire family:

Thank you to everyone concerned with Jason and his health.

Jason has dedicated his adult life to this cause, leading up to KONY2012. We thought a few thousand people would see the film, but in less than a week, millions of people around the world saw it. While that attention was great for raising awareness about Joseph Kony, it also brought a lot of attention to Jason-and, because of how personal the film is, many of the attacks against it were also very personal, and Jason took them very hard.

Let us say up front- that Jason has never had a substance abuse or drinking problem, and this episode wasn't caused by either of those things. But yes, he did some irrational things brought on by extreme exhaustion and dehydration. On our end- the focus remains only on his health, and protecting our family. We'll take care of Jason, you take care of the work.

The message of the film remains the same: stop at nothing.
