If You Could Only Drive One Car For The Rest Of Your Life, What Would It Be?
When William Cowper said "Variety is the very spice of life" it wasn't in reference to my views on car ownership, but it could have been. What if the days of automotive variety ended today? What car would you pick?
One of the best parts of life is owning and driving a variety different cars. Over our lifetimes, it is safe to say the car obsessed among us buy, sell, and own a few more cars than the average person. Some of us have multiple cars for different purposes. Some of us sell a car whenever we get bored with our current one. Some of us drive our cars until they can no longer continue mechanically and we have to go out searching for the next one.
What if for some reason all of that changed today? What if you were told that you could only drive one car for the rest of your life? It had to be your fun car, your reliable car, your all weather car, your family car, your commuter car all wrapped into one. What would you pick to spend your automotive eternity with?
Personally, after hours of deliberation, I think I might be driving a 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS for the rest of time. The Impala's new enough that I wouldn't feel too guilty driving it in the winter yet old enough I could work on it. The Impala is a reliable, fairly bulletproof rear wheel drive V8 platform with almost endless potential for modification. I like the way they drive on the highway and the way they look in Dark Cherry Metallic. I'm sure over time I would come up with 1000 reasons it was a bad decision to pick it but I think that happens if you drive any car long enough, let alone for the rest of your life.
So what would you take the plunge with? If you could only own one car for the rest of your life, what would it be?
