Law enforcement agencies from across the U.S. have reached out to Jalopnik for help with car identifications since your input was "critical" to solving a hit-and-run earlier this year.
Today, we try to help out detectives in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. with a tragic hit-and-run from last week.
There are at least two surveillance videos of the vehicle that struck and killed 19-year-old Rebecca McCallick in front of her Wilkes-Barre, Pa. apartment on July 24. Neither of them offer authorities much to go on.
Also frustrating investigators is the fact that the driver of a second vehicle who saw what happened, but took off without calling police, has still not come forward.
An eyewitness told police a black pickup truck with a loud exhaust struck McCallick in front of her 199 Hazle St. apartment. ...
Detectives continued looking for that vehicle and reviewing surveillance footage. They spent Wednesday checking into tips of similar trucks with front-end damage, police said.
"Obviously, the driver in question knows their actions," [City spokesman Drew] McLaughlin said. "Regardless of the circumstances, the best thing for everyone is for that driver to contact the Wilkes-Barre Police Department as soon as possible."
Police are not yet releasing a description of the second vehicle, McLaughlin said.
Tipster GK, a senior at King's College, where Rebecca had just finished her freshman year on the dean's list, didn't know her personally, "but mutual friends say she was a total sweetheart."
Let's see if there's anything we can do to help police there figure out — or at least narrow down some shoddy video evidence to — a make and model.
