Around 1990, Gunther Holtorf had just finished installing a bed and storage racks in his '88 G-Wagen. His next move was to put a personal ad in Die Zeit, and shortly after Christine responded he popped the question; "Why don't we do a little bit of travel?"

Holtorf had a bit of a thing going– he met Christine not long after returning from another off-road expedition with his third wife Beate (it didn't work out). But apparently his fourth try was a charm; the pair spent two decades together rolling through 177 countries and putting over half a million miles on "Otto;" the blue-grey Mercedes-Benz G 300 Diesel they lived together in for the entirety of their journey.
