One summer night in the late 1970s, we padded into the living room in our pyjamas to watch a horror movie called "The Car," about an evil luxury coupe killing off the citizens of a desert town. Three hours later we lay awake in bed, too scared to turn off the lights lest James Brolin appear in our room wielding more of his dumb-as- acting like a scythe.
Still, Despite the movie's shortcomings, the star was really the four-wheeled George Barris creation in the title role, a custom-built 1971 Lincoln with fenders of 20 gauge steel and a door-to-window ratio of like 3:1. According to Barris.com, four versions of the car were built. No word on whether any survived exposure to Brolin's stilted dialogue.
