Frankfurt Premiere: Volkswagen GT Twincharger

One of the wonkiest new cars to debut in Frankfurt is Volkswagen's Golf GT, powered by the company's new Twincharger engine. In case you hadn't heard, the Twincharger is a 170hp TDI four banger, aspirated by both supercharger (compressor) and turbocharger, which allows for more rounded performance (the supercharger kicks in from the get-go, reducing turbo lag, and the turbo does its thing when revs are high). The engine will be launched in Europe in early 2006, in both the Golf GT and Touran van. [Update: Lest we neglect to mention, the GT will also be available with gas (petrol) and TDI diesel powerplants.]

Could it be? the Twincharger Twins??
