The first all-electric cop car — a converted 2000 Chevy Impala — went into service this week in the municipal home of the Comet Drive-In — Connellsville, Pennsylvania. The cruiser's been gutted and rehabbed with an electric motor, control systems and battery pack by Coherent Systems International. It's still a prototype funded by Coherent's R&D budget, so the town didn't have to pay any of the steep conversion costs, likely topping six figures ($75,000 just for parts). But they say maintenance costs will be a fraction of a traditional cruiser's, though it won't be patrolling at night or when it's wet. Let's hope the perps don't find out.
