Thanks to a pedagogy towards rules for fun games that must have been awe-inspiring in any era, Sir Edward Hoyle got to decide how whist was played, and thus the phrase "according to Hoyle" came to be uttered by a man wearing jheri curls and an "I'm With Stupid" t-shirt in "Pulp Fiction."
