Childish Gambino — a.k.a. Donald Glover — — a.k.a. Troy — — is the rare indie act that maintains popularity against a rather large indie backlash. Specifically, Pitchfork gave it a 1.6 in a rather scalding review.

I disagree with their assessment. While certainly not the best hip hop album that year from a former or current TV star (that goes to "Take Care"), it's an enjoyable take on pop rap that goes right up to the edge of taking itself too seriously but stops short.

The video also has Gambino in a W123 Mercedes 300D with MB Tex interior. My first car. Making out in the backseat of that thing brings back memories...
