Confirming what was already well known, General Motors said today it would add two new Cadillac models next year — the big XTS and the small ATS, a 3-Series fighter whose profile was shown in this chiaroscuro teaser.

The ATS will hit the Cadillac lineup in 2012, likely as a 2013 model year vehicle.

The small Cadillac will be produced at Lansing Grand River, the same Michigan assembly plant that builds the midsize Cadillac CTS sedan, coupe and wagon.

"The car we codenamed ATS is being developed to be a driver's car on an all-new Cadillac-specific RWD-AWD architecture," GM President of North America, Mark Reuss, said. "We have extensively and exhaustively studied the competitive segment, and we have benchmarked the best. And when this car comes out, that will be readily apparent."

Thanks to a generously shadowed image, a little lightening reveals the rest of a vehicle that looks to share similar sculpting and cut lines as the Cadillac CTS Coupe.

SOMEONE.. please explain to me...

(I know the concept of what the germans have done and what everyone does by.. making their largest cars.. larger.. in order to bring in the smallest.. and they all grow in size to accommodate..)

Accord / Civic got larger to bring in FIT

Camry / Corolla got larger to bring in Yaris

7 / 5 / 3 Series got larger to bring in 1 series (ntm merging and cutting the german bullshit finer in the 7/5/3 categories to bring in the 6/4/2 series..) X5 / 3.. for the 1...

Same can be said for Taurus / Fusion / Focus for the Fiesta...

What is the overall point.. of having the CTS.. that was designed to "fight" the 3... now its the ATS's job. Ya sure its not the ATS v 1 series?! Now that the CTS = 5 series in size?
