Automakers Clean House; But Will It Be Clean Enough?

US automakers are culling their herds by discontinuing several aging car models this spring. With the Mercury Sable, Lincoln Aviator, Pontiac Bonneville and Sunfire and GMC Envoy XUV all fading to black, it seems Detroit is taking a firm stand on excess. But is it enough? Why stop at the Sable, for example. Ford should follow through on its backswing and take out its cousin Taurus, which screams for an over-an-out louder than TV's "According to Jim"? Does Chevrolet keep the butt-ugly Monte Carlo around merely for the Nascar conceit? How about the Dodge Stratus? Is it a federal statute that every car maker must produce a mediocre midsized sedan? Let's open up the floor — tell us your picks for the car models automakers can do without, foreign or domestic. We'll publish the results on Monday.
