You mention Kyle Larson talking about the success of the D4D program like he’s a footnote, Larson won a cup championship already and is one of 4 driver’s in the running to win another tomorrow. Larson is a future hall of famer, one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers and will be a force in the series for years to come. Read more

  • America First Legal, led by a former Trump advisor, claims NASCAR is racist against white men

Whitest, most male sport not white, male enough, say athletically incompetent white men

Eh, I’m not a fan of Vegas, but the downtown arts district is worth a look if you’re in the area. No casinos, no Strip, and good food and drink and interesting independent stores and galleries in a human scaled, walkable setting. Nice collaborative events too, and Meow Wolf’s fun immersive  installation is only 3 Read more

Decent wages help, coupled with stability and predictability. Friends and family in Sweden live comfortably on small incomes (with higher prices, Big Mac index is $5.59 v $5.15 here), because they don’t have to worry about sudden $1,000 healthcare bills, daycare is a nominal fee, etc etc.

As a European living in the US, who thinks tipping culture has gotten completely out of hand, but also used to bartend and wait tables for a living - I am torn. Read more

Yeah, that line gets dragged out a lot and for one its bullshit. For most people there are like 3-4 shifts per week that pay bank. The rest you barely make minimum wage. If you are lucky. Which turns into, oh you are sick on a Friday? Well, I need that shift to pay rent/groceries/whatever. So, guess I’m showing up to Read more

Same thing in Sweden. It’s the new all touchscreen payment machines that is usually provided by startups in the sector that’s the problem. But, you can just just choose “No tip” and go on with your day. If you’d do that in the US you’d be chased with pitchforks...

servers that do that are idiots.  theyll never be approved for a loan.

One more reason to avoid Vegas all together. Read more

Those options are basically everywhere now. I had it come up at one of those little markets where the person had a mini card reader and a BBQ joint in which all of the workers were just behind a counter like a fast food joint. I think it’s just part of the template software and no one cares to fix it.

I’ve attended F1 races, including Monaco, so there’s no “bucket list” mentality that would get me into Vegas for this race. All I see is obscene price-gouging being implemented. If that floats yer boat, getting reamed over seeing a race where you’ll be cordoned into one section only, fine, do it. But I maintain you’ve Read more

Tipping is *supposed to be* an extra thank-you for good, personal service. Not an expectation.

We do tip with good service. But we expect people to get a normal living wage. America is 1 of the , if not the only country i have ever seen with a mandetory tip culture. Read more

The latter.

Yet another reason to stay away from Vegas immediately before and during that event.

I’m starting to develop an early case of Schadenfreude for both Las Vegas and F1 due to the obscenely high prices. Fans are just wallets to vacuum cash from. I do hope it ultimately all goes well, but I would not be surprised if it all turns into a S*!t show. In Sept. the cabbies were griping and the strip was turning Read more

Just pay your service workers a living wage. Hell, my daughter - age 19 - works as a hostess at a nice restaurant in Vancouver. She makes $20/hr and gets a small cut of the tip-out. Yes, Vancouver is exceedingly expensive to live in. But she and her roommate make it work. Decent wages make a difference. Read more

Wow so if everyone refused to tip businesses would literally sort out the financials overnight and start paying employees fair wages? Or do you think this is just a cash grab and not much of this “surcharge” is going to make it to the workers?
