Kemper Insurance Review

Through our review of Kemper Insurance, our team rates it 3.6 out of 5.0 stars. While Kemper Insurance does have many complaints and generally negative reviews online, it provides strong coverage to high-risk drivers at reasonable rates. Depending on your situation, that could count for a lot. Many high-risk motorists are pleasantly surprised by how much car insurance is from Kemper Auto Insurance. However, if you’re not a high-risk driver and have none in the family, you may want to look for coverage elsewhere.

Positive Kemper Insurance Reviews

It was somewhat difficult to find Kemper customers who reported positive experiences. However, those who did mentioned helpful Kemper Auto Insurance agents and affordable policies for high-risk drivers.

“My insurance agency was great in helping me find Kemper when I went off my parents’ car insurance. It was a smooth and easy transition . . . I have been with my car insurance for about a year now and have had zero issues with them.”
Dena via Consumer Affairs

Kemper Insurance Complaints

People reporting negative experiences with Kemper Insurance were much easier to find. Complaints tend to mention poor communication and difficulties during the claims process.

“It has been 30 days since an uninsured motorist hit me. Kemper is my insurance company, and so far they have done nothing! They do not return calls no matter how many times you call or beg them to do so.”
– Jane F. via BBB

“I have been waiting almost two months for an answer on whether or not my car will be fixed. They just ignore calls and emails. The managers are not helpful in any way.”
– Crystal J. via BBB

Kemper Auto Insurance Cost

Kemper Auto Insurance specializes in covering high-risk drivers at reasonable rates. Motorists who fall into that category, such as those who need SR-22 coverage, have a good chance of finding favorable pricing with the company.

Since Kemper Auto Insurance focuses on insuring high-risk drivers, coverage for other motorists can be pricier than from other providers. Still, for those looking to insure an entire family of drivers that includes teens or seniors, the combined premium may compete with some of the cheapest car insurance rates on the market.

Like nearly all providers, Kemper Auto Insurance determines personalized rates for each policyholder based on personal information and vehicle details. Here are some of the factors that can affect your car insurance premium:

  • Age: Younger drivers and senior motorists pay more for car insurance than middle-aged people. Teen drivers often pay the highest premiums.
  • Vehicle: More expensive vehicles are generally pricier to insure. The same goes for cars that are statistically more likely to be stolen.
  • Driving record: Any accident or ticket in the last three years will increase your auto insurance rates. However, premiums may go up less with Kemper Auto Insurance than with others.
  • Location: Average premiums vary wildly between states, according to a 2021 study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Rates within states can vary by ZIP code, with drivers in rural areas usually paying less than urbanites.
  • Credit score: Drivers with bad credit scores will often pay more for car insurance than those with high credit scores.

Kemper Auto Insurance Discounts

Average prices for Kemper Auto Insurance may not always be the cheapest on the market, but the company offers plenty of discounts to help lower your rates. Here are some of the savings opportunities you may be eligible for with Kemper car insurance:

  • Defensive driving course discount: In some states, taking an approved safe driver course makes you eligible for lower rates.
  • Proof of prior insurance discount: You’ll pay smaller premiums if you had an insurance policy before signing up for Kemper car insurance.
  • Advance quote discount: Save money if you move forward on a policy before its effective start date.
  • Military discount: Active-duty military and National Guard members may save on auto insurance policies.
  • Homeowner discount: If you have home insurance, you’ll receive a lower car insurance rate.

Kemper Auto Insurance Competitors: Top Picks

Geico: Best Overall Provider

In our Geico insurance review, the company scored highly in every category. It’s also available in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, which is why we name it the Best Overall Provider out of every car insurance company we researched. Kemper Auto Insurance Review: FAQ

How We Rate Insurers

Our review process aims to deliver consistent and unbiased assessments of car insurance providers. While there are multiple qualities that make a car insurance company successful, our review team focuses on those we believe are the most important for consumers:

  • Cost: Cost can be difficult to compare between insurers because so many factors impact annual premiums. The cheapest insurer for one driver may not be the cheapest for another. To determine our cost score, we look at insurance rate estimates generated by Quadrant Information Services, discount opportunities, and consumer reports.
  • Coverage: To determine our coverage score, we look at the number of coverage options available as well as coverage limits and deductible options. Our ratings also take into account additional services and benefits like roadside assistance.
  • Reliability: It’s important that an auto insurer is able to meet its claims obligations. Companies with a strong financial strength rating from AM Best score best in this category. Established insurers with a long history of reliable service also receive positive marks.
  • Service: We comb through customer reviews on sites like the BBB to learn about customer experiences. Insurers with a low volume of complaints score well in this area. We also consider the claims process, giving higher ratings to car insurance providers that offer easy-to-use claims apps.
