A Frightful Accident on a Turkish Highway

This is an in-car clip of a serious-looking accident that happened in Turkey. The driver mistimes a lane change and flips his car—with neither the camera nor the stereo skipping a beat. Warning: NSFW

In the summer of 2001, I was working at a foundation in the D.C. suburbs. Mine was a bicycle commute. One morning, as I was making my way up a hill in low gear, standing on the pedals, the chain snapped without notice. I was propelled into the asphalt with incredible force and blacked out for a few seconds. When I came to, I noticed a group of construction workers eyeing me with mild disinterest and I also noticed that my portable CD player had not even skipped. Thurston Moore continued with the chorus of Teen Age Riot as I gathered myself and tried not to notice all the blood on my face.

These days, a car can suffer similarly violent deceleration without interruption of in-car entertainment. What you can see in this video is a carful of Turkish kids driving at excessive speed on a highway, swapping lanes with reckless abandon, until a jerk of the wheel proves too much for their car and they crash.

It’s not immediately clear what the fate of the occupants was. The subtitles are mostly gibberish when given the Google Translate treatment except for the last one, the voice of a girl after the accident: “yardım edin” means “please help”.
