ABC News reports the U.S. has dropped charges against a truck driver after he was caught with over a ton of weed in his trailer at the border last month. He claims he has no knowledge of how it got there, and it looks like that’s the case.
The driver, Tasbir Singh, was detained last month at the Canadian/U.S. border by agents. Drug dogs detected the scent of the marijuana and seven pallets of weed were found in his trailer. The street value of the weed was estimated at $3.2 million.
Singh claims he has no idea how the weed got there, which is plausible as covid protocols apparently call for truckers to stay in their cabs while their trailers are loaded:
Singh told authorities that he believed he had picked up compression springs in North York, Ontario. The delivery was supposed to go to Ohio. Because of COVID-19 rules, he never got out of his truck while it was being loaded, his attorney Ellen Michaels said.
It appears that both Singh and his trucking company werr duped—someone hacked into the company’s computers and created a fake spring order. The Detroit Free Press reports that the company “backtracked and were able to determine that the fraud was committed on the Best Care trucking company through a hacked Gmail account.”
Singh was facing a 5-year prison sentence before the charges were dropped. However, the charges were dropped without prejudice which means he could potentially be charged at a later date. For what though remains to be seen.
