Rumors of a Bugatti Veyron crash in France this summer are true, and worse than originally thought. The smashed übercar was a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport. And not just any Veyron Grand Sport. It was the $2.9 million Chassis #001.
The Bugatti-obsessed French over at Bugatti Passion say the car was Swiss-registered Veyron Grand Sport #001 out of 150 copies.
Though the limited-edition targa-topped Bugatti originally sold for about $2 million a piece (compared to $1.6 million for the standard Veyron if there is such a thing), Chassis #001 went under the gavel at Pebble Beach for about $2.9 million. Though the one showed appears to have a slight color difference, it's possible it was just a show vehicle and they let the guy who spent $2.9 million on a car pick a few options.
In a move surely to offend the proletariat, the owner might have crashed it into the gates of his Villa on the Cote d'Azur. Rich people problems. At least it wasn't a low-flying pelican.
