Don't like NASCAR? Not watching today's race right now? That's OK, you'll probably still enjoy this vintage footage from the 1960 Daytona 500. Watch as 37 vehicles crash in what we believe to be the biggest smash-up in NASCAR history.
1960 was only the second year of the Daytona 500 and it's obvious from post crash footage the safety equipment was minimal. Over 50 years since this crash, and ten since the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr., racers competing in today's Daytona 500 (the "Super Bowl of stock car racing") can race at high speeds with the confidence they are protected by over five decades of safety innovation.
I don't really know why though, because when the dust settled from this violent crash the worst of the damage was a few minor injuries and some mangled vintage iron. Amazingly, every driver made it out alive.
Car of Tomorrow? Blow me. We'll take the Car of Yesterday, back when stock car racing was really a race of stock cars, thank you very much.
