Screw overcomplicated, overpriced hybrids and urine urea-injected diesels. Despite Car and Driver saying otherwise, if you really want to save money, you should buy a beater for your daily driver. Drop a couple of hundred bucks on basic transportation, and who cares about that last nth degree of fuel economy? With motoring this cheap, who cares about safety? And if it breaks, you can just throw it away. But with so many cheap old cars laying around the nation’s lawns and used car lots, which one should you buy?
