In 1973, according to their advertising, Jeep was the toughest four-letter word on wheels. This dealer promo showcases what the 1973 Jeep CJ5 had to offer to customers on- and off-road, especially off.
It is no secret that senseless product abuse is painfully absent from most new truck and SUV commercials. These days it is rare to see a vehicle senselessly flying through the air or randomly turning off the freeway to drive up the embankment. This Jeep CJ5 dealer promo from 1973 has all that and more.
Just three years before this promo was produced, Jeep was purchased by AMC from Kaiser. When Jeep was purchased, it was a money losing division. AMC was trying new marketing and different versions of the base model to turn the brand around. One of these is the Jeep Renegade, which like many vehicles in the 70s featured "Sporty Wheels" and "Rally Stripes".
This promo video was distributed to dealers to inform and get them excited about selling Jeeps. It is really cool to see a stock 1973 Jeep CJ5 flying through the air and being beaten on off road. If I had a lot full of early 70s Jeeps under my control and saw this video, I don't think I could resist telling trails to get lost and seeing if a new CJ5 could fly.
