In some places, getting caught speeding simply means an expensive traffic ticket. Virginia is not one of those places. Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth is about to get acquainted with how seriously the state deals with speed.
Back in August Werth got nailed going 105 mph on I-495 near the Georgetown Pike a 55 mph zone in Fairfax County in his Porsche 911 GT3 RS. That was more than fast enough to get him charged with reckless driving, classified as the most serious level of misdemeanor in Virginia. (I know a little about that myself. To sum up, I got nailed doing 93 in a 55 and got sentenced to 30 days in jail with 27 suspended, so I did a weekend in a regional jail.)
In a brief report, the Washington Post says Werth was sentenced to 10 days in jail for the offense. (The Post says "prison," but they almost certainly mean "jail." There is a difference.) Werth plans to appeal.
NBC4's Julie Carey reports that Werth got nailed pretty hard here. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, with 170 suspended, so that's why he'll serve 10; he will also lose his license for an unspecified period of time.
Once again, do not speed in Virginia. Don't speed anywhere, really, but especially don't speed in Virginia. I shouldn't have done it, Werth shouldn't have done it, and the state does not fuck around when people get caught doing it.
