Eastern Europe has been under a Siberian spell for a week or so, prompting the owner of a Hummer H2 to test the six inches of ice on Hungary’s Lake Balaton for some Siberian-style winter driving. What he apparently forgot was that a few days of 10-degree weather does not magically turn Lake Balaton into Lake Baikal.
He promptly crashed through the ice into three feet of icy water, but not before posting a photo to his Facebook page where he bragged about driving right across the lake to its south shore. He didn’t. As for the second Hummer, it came to the rescue. Similar ice conditions and a similar curb weight of three tons did not produce different results.
Fellow Hungarians, please take note: Balatonakarattya ≠ Severobaykalsk.
