This is Red Bull’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey at the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed, reading the manual of the Red Bull RB5: the car he’s sitting in, and the car he designed for the 2009 Formula One season.
It was Newey’s first championship-class car for Red Bull, taking the title fight with Jenson Button’s Brawn BGP–001 all the way to the penultimate race at Interlagos. A few months after this picture was taken, after this car’s successor won the 2010 world championship in the hands of Sebastian Vettel, the team gave the car to Newey as a gift.
The Guardian has recently posted a wonderful interview with Formula One’s gentle rocket scientist, where he talks about his easily romanticized 2B pencil, his life at Red Bull, and the reason he lost most of his hair in 1994.
