The screamin' Honda B engine gets a lot of attention in the automotive world (as well it should), but we shouldn't overlook its shockingly dependable corporate sibling, the D.
Installed in countless Civics, CRXs, and Integras, the D was made from 1984 through 2005 and should be considered the major factor in giving Honda its present-day rep for reliability. Available with one cam or two, displacements from 1.2 to 1.7 liters, and VTEC-ified or not, the D is one of the all-time greats of the Workhorse Engine world. While the D tends to throw rods and/or blow head gaskets on a LeMons track, 300,000-mile Ds are commonplace on the street. Of all the cars I've owned, the Honda D has powered more of them than any engine… other than the small-block Chevy, of course.
