McLaren's Pedro de la Rosa Thinks Women Are Too Weak To Race In F1

No_Danica_Patrick_Winner.jpgWith all the buzz over Danica Patrick wiping the floor at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan last weekend, it's easy to forget there's other talented females engaged in various forms of motorsport across the world. Just look at Michèle Mouton's rally career — multiple wins in her Audi Quattro and finishing a close second place in the 1982 WRC championship. So you know that the girls can go just as fast as the boys — and as we saw this past weekend, sometimes faster. So this ultimately leads to the question, "Can a women be successful in Formula One?" Well, veteran McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa seems to think women might just not be strong enough to deal with the rigors of the track.

According to F1-Live, the 37-year old de la Rosa said:

"There are less and less obstacles because there are now many women in kart racing ... The base of the pyramid is expanding ... I would be delighted to see it happen sooner or later, but it is more difficult for women because of the important physical elements of racing in Formula One,"
Although we wonder what Danica would have to say about that, we're pretty sure she's too busy on a Sports Illustrated or FHM shoot to dignify it with a response. Of course as soon as she's done with that, she'd probably point out to de la Rosa that she managed to do pretty well against Helio Castroneves, Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan. Of course none of them were in Formula 1, but who's counting. [via F1-Live]

  • Dunno,Alonso has done well for a moaning girl.

  • you just wanted an excuse to repost that danica photo ;)

  • motorsports? can't we kick ass in something that doesn't involve fossil fuels and ungodly noise?

    this is superyucky.

  • He just wants the boys for himself.

It is just a matter of time. It is emberassing that motorsport still have this midevial thinking. If they try they are good cute girls as long they are not winning.

  • @snowpoppies: OF TOPIC!

  • Women certainly aren't as physically stong as a male, but I can't imagine that driving an F1 car takes blatant physical strength. I'm thinking it's more of an endurance and mental strength test than anything. Women > men when it comes to physical endurance and mental endurance, IMHO.

  • @snowpoppies: Methinks you're at the wrong site. Motorsports are most definitely NOT superyucky. Well, maybe NASCAR sometimes...

@snowpoppies: Oy, this is what happens when we run a splice to our gal-pal site, Jezebel.

  • I've been wondering if Danica's curiously thick tree stump of a neck comes from resisting all those g-forces. It's a new kind of sexy!

    @snowpoppies: Fossil fuels kick ass.

Oh buddy, you gonna get such keeks in da ballsh,
then they gonna cut your yoo-hoo und ballsh off!

    ...........Say goodbye to da Siemens^^^^^^^^^

  • She looks fantastic in that bikini.

  • F1 is more marathon than sprinting. Women will probably not be able to exceed men in sprinting because men have a slightly higher natural muscle density. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see women starting to win a few marathons as female-physiology training programs come along. Not only does female physiology seem to give an advantage to endurance sports, it would seem to me that women are a lot better at multi-tasking than men, which you would think would help with fuel/tire strategy.

  • @snowpoppies: It will have to be the case until we can make cars run on kittens. They just don't burn as fast.

  • Now for once, he can win the argument over who's penis is longer.

  • @layabout: Steam Power! Doesn't really matter what you throw in the firebox.

@layabout: Their little claws clog the injectors.
And speaking of claws, I can see some coming out here reeeeeeal soon!!!1!!

  • @Ray Wert: I thought we learned a long time ago not to cross-post stories with Jezebel.

@13oostedwgn: I don't believe that I'll ever, in my lifetime, see the fastest woman in the world being faster than the fastest man. I am of the opinion that the physiological differences are too great to overcome. And I think it's the same for most other sports too. The first places I think you'll see women competing with men equally at the top levels of the sport are golf and motorsports, because the physical aspects of the sports aren't as great as say, basketball or sprinting.

  • @POLAЯ И PAЯIS Я BFF: Man,your'e sicker than me. Take it you are talking about our flat shoe loving friend from sunday?

  • @Sloop_John_B: Check out the Top Gear clip of Hammond piloting (or attempting to) the Renault F1 car. I think he said his arms were like jelly before even reaching the end.

With adequate preparation and upper body strength training, I don't see why a woman couldn't compete in F1.

  • @elwood: I wasn't talking about fastest, that would be sprinting. I was talking about physical sports that require different physiological conditions, hence endurance sports which are just phsically demanding, just demanding in a different way.

  • Image of POLAЯZSMAЯTAMINO POLAЯZSMAЯTAMINO at 10:11 AM on 04/24/08 *

@layabout: Don't say her name, she might come back.
    Yuck >P

  • Regarding F1 - Please google Max Mosely. From the top down, F1 is corrupted. It is little wonder that attitudes like this exist in F1.

  • this comment coming from a guy who doesn't even have a regular ride in F1. Maybe he's Formula One's equivalent of a white appliance.

  • Image of POLAЯZSMAЯTAMINO POLAЯZSMAЯTAMINO at 10:19 AM on 04/24/08 *

I'm sure by the weekend we'll hear something like...
"I would never do that to any kind of chickas. I've always taken pride to be the smooth-talkin' Spanish guy that can talk to the babes, that can refer to them truly as a sister from a different mother."

  • I don't think Physically she is too weak to race F1, although she does seem to occasionally spin the car coming into/out of the pits so maybe if F1 brought back traction control she would do fine.

Oh and I nominate layabout for COTD.

  • That is the tamest quote. What are you ragging on? He said he would be delighted to see it happen, but it would be more difficult... He didn't say "I hate women, and it will be impossible for them to compete". You guys really just wanted to post that pic again didn't you?

  • How different are current Indy 500 cars compared to current F1 vehicles? History has a good number of Indianapolis 500 winners who have won the F1 championship, so it seems silly to say that a woman who won the Indy 500 couldn't pull off the same thing.

  • @POLAЯ И PAЯIS Я BFF: I think it's like Beetle Juice, she only comes back if you say her name 3 times.

  • @13oostedwgn: I wonder, is the upper limit of lung capacity higher for males than females? I think if it was possible for women to seriously compete for first place overall in an event like a marathon, it probably would have happened. In the 2008 Boston Marathon, the top 10 mens finishers were an average of 20 minutes faster than the top 10 womens finishers, which is a fairly huge gap.

I really think one of the first places women are going to compete against men is in motorsports. We've already seen it in drag racing, and now we're starting to see it in other motorsports too.

I take exception to the whole concept of the do-not-enter stamp on that photo.

Oh, and another shout out for Vanina Ickx, since we're talking speed-capable women.

  • @dolo54: I think they really just wanted to get a 200-post thread by getting the Jezebels involved in a big-ass argument.

  • I know some pretty wild girls, and not one of them is into Nazi hookers. So I say no. Women may be equal to men in many respects, but their love of Nazi hookers, and therefore their success in F1, pales in comparison.

  • The reality is that a woman would have an unfair advantage in a Formula 1 car due to her weight (similar to Indy.) But that already gives an unfair advantage to small guys, and nobody complains about it.

I don't see a woman winning in F1 though, the level of competition is just too high and the cars are too insane. The talent level of F1 drivers is miles above the talent level for IRL drivers.

It isn't a physical thing, women can work out and get the brute strength and endurance to be able to withstand a race (and to anyone who said that racing isn't a physical sport, why are the drivers always soaked in sweat after a race?) but due to the fact that there simply isn't enough women racing at the grassroots level of things.

To be a F1 driver, you need to have amazing natural, genetically derived driving skills (about 1 in 30 million), have been racing competitively since about age 5, and then to have progressed through about 10 different racing leagues (in each you should be miles ahead of the rest of the team), and have incredible luck to be able to find the right team. The essential problem at the moment is there just isn't enough people at the moment who are getting their 5 year old girls into racing at the moment. So a lot of the women in racing just don't have the natural skills to progress all the way to F1.

I could see a women as F1 champ, but not in the next fifty years. The only way I could see it happening would be if they coddled the crap out of a female driver and made sure she got a win or two in order to attract media attention.

  • More Danica in white, less neo-muscle cars in orange.

  • @beercheck: Whu did I read Vanilla Ice? I have a hang up in my brain.

  • Of course chicks have no chance in F1.

It has nothing to do with stupid indycar racing in an oval or long bends with retarded americans and loosers coming over from F1 as competitors.

In F1 it's all about chicanes and tight turns that would break your wrists if you're not prepared. not to to mention the high Gforce in the corners that would make a chick's neck snap if she tried it at the speed the pros do.

don't misunderstand me, I'm not a sexist, I like girls when they're between me and the bed, just not when they drive their fucking SUV's like they try to kill you on purpose.

  • "because of the important physical elements of racing in Formula One"

Like I said, How can you race without a penis?!?!

  • @Evil-Jeremy: Actually, in Formula 1 there is no direct weight advantage to being small or light, because the car's minimum weight is with driver, as it also is now in Indy. There's the advantage of being able to place ballast in more ideal positions, and there is an aerodynamic advantage as the cockpit can be made narrower to allow for better airflow.

    Danica - Zanks!

  • @adilator:

Err, High Gforce issues? Tell that to Ashley Force.

  • They could probalby race in F-1, but that doesn't mean they're going to win any races. Let 'em race I say.

  • @adilator:
Hmmm... taking your comment at face value - "In F1 it's all about chicanes and tight turns that would break your wrists if you're not prepared. not to to mention the high Gforce in the corners that would make a chick's neck snap if she tried it at the speed the pros do." - I guess that means that there shouldn't be any female fighter pilots...[www.fighterchicks.com]
Get your head out of your neolithic ass - if there are women out there flying fighter planes (usually used as a close analogy to F1 racing), there are women out there who'd kick your butt on a road course.
