We have it from our good friends at BMW Blog that they have it from their good friends that the 2009 BMW Z4 is going to come with both a soft and hardtop, similar to what Mazda does with the Miata. Those in sunny climates can have their lightweight softtop. Those in areas where the weather gets a bit rougher can opt for the hardtop. Abortions for some, tiny American flags for others. Horray! They're not discontinuing the coupe are they? That's their best looking vehicle.
@xenti: Like hell.
I just don't like this car. For me, it's gotten to be somewhat like the GT-R. The more I look at it, the less I like it, aesthetically, at least.
Overkill of edgy lines and curves, design mess.
IMO BMW's most asthetically pleasing car on the market now. The M coupe just makes up for the horrendous X6.
So it is in the very beginning stages of E.D.?
tucon: design mess Yeah exactly. There are swell basic lines under those showy razor-edges; all somebody needs to do is make a wax model of that car and have at it with a heat gun. And, of course, shave off two cylinders and 300 lbs of weight.
@wkiernan: Better make it 600.
And why does the page tell me there's no photo in my comment whenever I quote someone? I know damn well there's not a picture here, I didn't add one.
For me it's gotta be abortions and tiny American flags. No compromise.
I'll pass on the porky, ugly BMW, and both its precise tops, however.
The old Zed 4 is just not bruce enough for me. I like the precision, dont like that it looks like ass, and would say that its seriously lacking in brucsosity, and is in dire need of an update. I won't beat up the bimmer too much, but, hey, if you're going to risk being called girly in a 2-seater, might as well go full montey and get a Miata (or an Rx-8 to a lesser extent). Then you get a car that actually drives great too! Yipee!
@Dr. Schm is better than you, and I knows It!: And is Japanese-reliable.. I test drove a Z4 2.5 & just wasn't feelin it. If I was going to spend that kind of cash I'd get an S2000 in a heartbeat. Went with the Miata instead, and beat it like a bitch..all it demands in return are oil changes & tires. Coming from an older BMW I could appreciate the Bruce & longevity, but the $1000 mystery breakdowns got old. When I decide its too slow, there are always turbo kits..
I love the z4.
It's hideous. Any fool can see that it's hideous.
And yet,
the built it anyways!
Note to all tall folk: one size does NOT fit all; test sit/drive before committing. This profile shot does not instill me with headroom confidence...
the = they
@Unevolved...?: I agree 110%. The Z4 coupe, and especially the M version, are by far the best looking cars that BMW has come up with in a long time.
I did also see the 128 Cabrio tonight, and wasn't completely offended by it, but overall BMW hasn't made a truly good looking car since at least the early 1990's.
Ahem....
You guys DO realize that the picture is from a current model Z$ with the optional Hardtop, right?
Z$=Z4
A professor at my college drives an M-spec Z3 (not the hatch) modified by Dinan, but I don't know who it is, else I'd learn if it's actually got some extra go-fast bits, or if it's just aesthetic.
On a jalop approved side note - Where does everyone stand on the 135i? I know its ugly... but I still like it. It's like an ugly little dog; after a wile it grows on you. Also, it's a 300hp ugly little dog.
Just wondering. Wiz out.
while (beer=/= typing well)
@MrWizard45: German engineering and performance on the cheap...can't beat that.
I must say that the current Z4 with non-retractable hardtop is one sexy car. I'm hoping BMW doesn't chip away at what's left of their "attractive" fleet.
PS
excellent usage of a Simpson's quote.
@MrWizard45: Closest thing to the E30 M3,but the E30 is still the daddy,well thats my opinion anyway.
Question. Does it come with hard AND soft tops? Or is it hard OR soft top? Neither your item nor the post at BMW Blog are clear on this, although BMW Blog uses the phrase "both options" which muddies things a bit. Assuming it's an or thing does that mean you can't have both? Nowhere does anyone except n0tquit3azn suggest that the hard top will be retractable, so does that mean we can have a removable hard top for chillier weather and a soft top for the warm stuff? Just axin'...
@Mike the Dog: should read "assuming it's an either/or thing"
@lascauxcaveman: Very sick. And twice as funny.
I am appalled to find that agree with you 4_Chan. The Z4 M-coupe is my favorite bimmer shape, currently. I don't like the lack of rearward visibility due to c-pillar design, but otherwise, it's a cargasm. I guess everybody has their own opinion.
Z4's are usually driven by blokes that can only pull a woman by the car they drive.Not sure who is sadder,the insecure,mushroom dicked guy,or the shallow,heartless bint that goes for that kind of guy.I guess they deserve each other.
@layabout: My previous statement does not include the Z4 coupe.
Sorry, definitely meant a removable hard top
This makes it almost as cool as the Z4 coupe, which is in turn almost as cool as the previous-gen M Coupe. Everything is better with less Bangle. Walk like a contrarian.
@Adamskiy: If ever there was a car needing Dinan go-fast, it's the 300 hp M Roadster...
Dinan's most popular mods for M models are suspension changes, I think.
Keep the coupe! I'm afraid the retractable hardtop on the next-gen Z4 spells the end for the coupe.
@Unevolved...?: And why does the page tell me there's no photo in my comment whenever I quote someone? I know damn well there's not a picture here, I didn't add one.
You are trying to comprehend the actions of the Gawker IT overlords. This is like pondering infinity. You cannot know it. The human mind is incapable of fathoming its bottomless emptiness. You can only accept its existence and its effects. Your only choice is to bow down, bend over, and receive what is given. Do not try to understand; it will destroy you.
On topic, the Z4 M Coupe is sex on wheels. I love it. A removable hard top for the Z4 Roadster would be badass. I'm not big on soft top convertibles, but a hard top would rock. Even better would be a removable hard top for weight savings.
There's precedent for a hard top Z4 NOT killing the Z4 M Coupe. #1 it's an M Coupe, not just a coupe. #2 the 6 series. I am hopeful.
Still driving my Z3-based M Roadster. Same 315hp as the new Z4-based model without all the ugly.
@OldeEnglishD:
european delivery comes in stages now? awesome!
;)
First: The current Z4 comes with a soft top and an optional hard top. The optional hard top on the current model is pictured.
Second: The next generation Z4 will give you the option of a folding metal roof OR a soft top. Based on the testing spy shots, it will likely look very little like the current model.
Third: The Z4M Coupe is the sexiest car in their stable and I can't wait to pick one up in a few years.
Wait... a folding hard top AND it won't look nearly as hideous as the current one? I may finally be ready to replace the Z3M in a few years.
My only real complaint with the Z3M is the plastic rear window... which a folding hard top (or just a soft top with glass window) would fix.
i do enjoy the z4 aswell, but that thing has some major visablitiy issues. the convertable version seems like the windsheild lip is going to bore its way into your skull if the unforseen happens [getting out of the car wrong, smacking into a telelphone pole]
and the coupe. well that car is just awesome but you cant see shit out of it
+ Watch video
where the fuck is my baseball bat?
hated this POS since it came out.
since when did a roadster need to look like a design sketch with the trace lines still standing out?
