2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: A Mustang-Killer Revealed

So what's the one complaint most often levied against the Ford Mustang? How about the lack of Independent Rear Suspension? Guess what? The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe has it. Here's the rest of the details — 212 HP 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a range-topping all-aluminum 306 HP DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. It'll be available starting in the spring of 2009. We'll have many more details shortly and our full gallery of the event in a moment — but yes, it's just been revealed.

ALL-NEW HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPE: A NEW BENCHMARK FOR AFFORDABLE 300-HORSEPOWER SPORTS COUPES

NEW YORK, March 19, 2008 - Hyundai unveiled Genesis Coupe, a new benchmark for affordable 300-horsepower sports coupes, during a press conference at the New York International Auto Show today. The 2010 Genesis Coupe is a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sports coupe featuring two performance-focused engines - a 212-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a range-topping all-aluminum 306-horsepower, DOHC 3.8-liter V6 engine. Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in the spring of 2009.
Following the introduction earlier this year of the rear-wheel drive Genesis sports sedan, Genesis Coupe is Hyundai's most dynamic performance car ever and the second consecutive all-new model introduction from Hyundai appealing directly to the car enthusiast. Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture that was originally developed for the Genesis sports sedan.
Genesis Coupe employs a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission. The Genesis Coupe 2.0t (2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo) offers an optional five-speed automatic with SHIFTRONIC® while the 3.8-liter V6 offers a ZF six-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC to handle the additional torque.
"We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sports coupes," said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. "The 3.8-liter version of Genesis Coupe takes things to an even higher level, rivaling the capability of premium-performance coupes like Infiniti G37."
Genesis Coupe was shown as a concept at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show and its transformation from concept to production reveals that its signature design features have emerged intact. Genesis Coupe is also unmistakably linked to several Hyundai concept cars. The powerful curves, surface detail, and "Z" bodyside lines come straight from the HCD9 Talus and the HCD8 sports coupe. Genesis Coupe's arching roofline and tapering greenhouse highlight the exterior profile and emphasize the car's broad shoulders and wide stance. Genesis Coupe rides on standard 18-inch alloy wheels or optional 19-inch wheels, both delivering a bold stance and aggressive handling.
In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, affordable sports coupe on the road, the Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. An information display screen, features an outside temperature reading, audio system information and HVAC settings. Analog gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai's signature blue gauge illumination.
Music lovers will welcome the inclusion of standard auxiliary input jacks (3.5 mm mini-jack and USB input) to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods®. Among the other refinements are an Infinity audio system, sport bucket seats and two-stage front seat warmers. Genesis Coupe also offers the convenience of a proximity key and push button starter.
The 2010 Genesis Coupe includes a wide range of both active and passive safety features. Standard safety equipment includes driver and front passenger advanced frontal airbags, along with front seat-mounted side airbags, side air curtains, active front head restraints, four-channel ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry's most effective life-saving technologies.

  • But... but... It's a Hyundai!

However good or terrible this thing drives, anyone who has driven a Kia or Hyundai of old will go running away in tears.

Pretty sure I liked it yesterday,
pretty sure I like it today too!

  • So did anybody else notice the different performance numbers for regular and premium gas?

  • Image of Mad_Science Mad_Science at 03:46 PM on 03/19/08 *

The 300Z and Supra live on!

@wookie1901: Cool that they posted them, rather than "require" premium.

Pretty much any car with electronic ignition timing can adjust to pretty much any fuel you put in it. Turbo-ed cars are a possible exception.

  • Wow, it's almost like a modern 240sx. I cringe when I type this but...uh...I want one. Make mine the turbo and in blue.

Jeebus, I never thought I'd want a Hyundai.

    Ever.

  • Doncha wish your Hoondai was HOT like me?
Doncha wish your Hoondai was FREE like me?
    Doncha?
    Doncha?

    Seriously, though, how much?!?!

  • I like it, but if it's gonna be a Mustang killer, it needs mo torque.

  • It's a Grand AM with a tiny V8.

    I'm not excited whatsoever.

I'm still not into it like the G8 and stuff, cause I'm not a small coupe type dude... but it's great that there's a suitable Hoondai for rubber burning!!

@Unevolved: Dude, I encourage anyone to even rent a Sonata.. I've gotten one (I rent A LOT of cars) and it's surprisingly nice with the V6! Kias all smell like dead cats inside, but Hoondais are showing true evolution! Just like 15 years behind everyone else but HEY.. Gold star for coming to play.

  • Anyone laying odds that the V8 from the sedan will drop into the engine bay of the coupe?

  • Here they come, watch out Japan Inc. China and India won't be too far behind them either. Somebody can always do it cheaper. We'll see how they hold up with a little rust on the fenders, that's my litmus test.

Anybody can send a shiny new car out into the world but let's see it get me home 2 quarts low rolling on a donut spare and metal to metal on the brakes. Let's see how it starts and runs after 6 years at a party college frat house. New cars don't impress me. You want to impress me, make something that survives

  • Platform sharing with a sedan that "has more interior space than a 7-series even though it is priced like a 3-series" sure has taken its toll on the weight - 3439 lbs. for the lighter turbo-4 version.

That really is a damn shame, it weighs almost as much as my G35 sedan, and about 500 pounds more than my old 240SX (which I was hoping for this to replace in spirit).

Still, if the turbo-4 version is as cheap as a V6 Mustang I'm going to be buying it (I'm very happy that they're bringing the turbo-4 to the US, that was somewhat in question).

  • @Meat Farley: V8? apparently not on the coupe.
insert "I coulda hadda V8" joke here.
I'll bet you could shoehorn the sedan's engine right into the coupe...

  • I actually think this is a nice looking car. "Mustang killer" may be a stretch, but I'm intrigued.

"This isn't your big sister's Tiberon" would be a great tag line for the ads.

  • @mytdawg: Amen, Brother. Amen.

  • Mustang intenders are not going to be interested in this car.

It doesn't have the distinctive and timeless styling nor is it an American icon with decades of heritage. It also lacks the V8, tire-scorching power.

What Hyundai has here is a thoroughly bland and bargain-basement G37 wannabe.

  • Too bad it doesn't look more like the original concept or I'd actually consider buying one.

  • Twinkies, cockroaches, Keith Richards, and old Impalas.

Things that can survive a nuclear holocaust for $200 Alex.

  • wait.. is that a naturally aspirated 3.8L 300hp DOHC engine?

one still wonders if it's still loosely based on the mitsu 6G engine designs.. swap that sucker into a forklift.. woooo.. good times..

  • @mytdawg: Of course, when we're a third-world country 30-40 years from now, the rest of the world will be gobsmacked when GM and Ford eschew building lawnmower-engined Nano clones and start building Focus- and Cobalt-sized cars again, but still way cheaper than China, India, Korea and most certainly Japan. Then, around the end of the century, 'Murican cars will again be on top of the heap!
Watch this to see what I mean:

  • Eh. 3500 lubs onna Tuburbalo Four-Pot is lackluster at best. Who gives a flute how much power you can wring from it? Optional 13" Brembos are a nice touch, though. It might be a cow in a track-suit, but you should be able to stop it.

  • @I'm so Malaise I can't taste it!!!!!!!!!11: I agree. A friend of mine has a Sonata and he loves it. for a FWD sedan, it's a good car and an incredible bargain.
As for the Genesis, I think I'm in love.

  • I wonder how the Japanese drifter kids will take to this (if it is released there)? Will they love it as its new, modern equipment that lessens the demand for, what are now, the ageing, battered warhorses such as the AE86, S13-S15, 180SX, etc, which are no doubt becoming rarer and rarer, as drifting exploits send more and more to scrap-heaps. Or will there be some sort of xenophobic, irrational hatred for them like the way some muscle-car lovers have for japenese performance cars?
"Bah, that cars useless! It could never stand up to proper Tokyo Muscle! The Koreans don't know what a real performanse car looks like! My mom's Nissan Cube could beat that thing on the Touge LOL! JAPANESE DOMESTIC FOR LIFE!!1!"

  • ~3500lbs??? Boo!

  • To everyone complaining about the weight to power of the 2.0 liter turbo...it might be a bit portly but have you ever seen the specs of a VW GTI? They're nearly identical!

  • Hey Morphine...

Quit bitching and go smoke a chode. Thanks to safety laws everything is "heavy" Go cry a river

2921 lb --> that's right, even the "precious" Prius POS is 3000 pounds. Some "economy" car.

    Mike

  • I like it but Genesis Coupe for a name is just plain dumb.

  • @mytdawg: Excellent point. When was the last time anybody saw a Scoupe rolling around under it's own power?

  • ...and a dragger too, I might add!

  • @FreeMan:

Probably. But it seems it would take a bit more investment than would be prudent for a Hyundai. I think the cheaper ticket to hoonland would be picking up the lighter 2.0t and chipping it to bump the boost to absurd levels. Sure, that would void the hell out of the warranty, but I don't think the warranty covers "backyard V8 swaps" either.

  • Loving it. It does remind me of a Silvia, except for the curb weight.

And for those saying "but it's a Hyundai," Hyundais today are like the Toyotas and Hondas of the 90s: great cars at reasonable prices.

  • @TomAnderson: I live in Michigan and we're already just about 3rd world again. The rest of the country is finally catching up now apparently. I keep seeing something in the news about the economy but it hasn't changed a bit. Here.

  • I too never thought I would say this but... I actually will be considering it when it is time for my two year trade. I am in a VW GTI (my second VW) now so it will really have to impress to get me out of German cars. I must say the rear wheel drive is going to pull me; or is that push me, to the show room.

  • @Meat Farley: Last summer in Canada I saw a Pony still chuggin' along.

  • I think it's a huge step in the right direction... I could argue a little about the styling but I'm all for the drivetrain choices.

  • A drastic improvement in styling is needed if this car is gonna remotely compete with the likes of a Mustang or even Camaro.

  • for the price you can overlook the somewhat boring skin. I wanna see the interior. to be very honest it looks better than the new mustang since it's not trying to be a very very bland retro thing. the genesis probably out-handles the mustang also. it may not have badge, this car, but it makes up for it in price and awesomeness of the reveal.

  • Image of Mad_Science Mad_Science at 05:55 PM on 03/19/08 *

    @TriShield: I'd consider cross-shopping this with a Mustang.

In one case you'd monkey with the engine to get more grunt, for the other it's all about trying to get some better handling.

Either way, probably one of the best bangs-for-the-buck around. (insert Spitzer joke)

  • @WheatKing: Quite likely... if it's the same 3.8 that's currently in the Azera.

  • You can generally fix power and handling, you can't say the same about looks. This car has none. It's anonymous. A Mustang is not, it's a stark and classic contrast to the sea of pod-shaped silver things that flood our roads today.

  • In terms of looks, Hyundai has never been exactly original in design, but it still looks sleek and modern, in all honestly, the Mustang looks so aerodynamically...wrong.

  • It's a bit too heavy.
The grill is too small. Needs a more aggressive grill like this.

  • Robble, robble, robble.

  • I am just grateful that I have lived long enough to witness the return of RWD and sanity. Notice how the new RWD car ads always mention RWD. How many car ads have you seen that said something like, "With all the advantages of front wheel drive!"? Like the Harley lover who, when asked about the new Japanese V-twins, said, "Well, at least they are getting the pistons in the right place." Whether this car is a success or not, "At least they are getting the drive wheels in the right place."
