Oh, GM! It was so cute to drop this bombshell on us. You heard about it first very early this morning, but now here it is, live and in the flesh—the Cadillac CTS Coupe. Even Bob Lutz himself was amazed that GM could keep this baby a secret, until... well, now, of course. The design for the vehicle is derived from the CTS sedan, and here's the enchanting backstory: Once the sedan was finished, the design team continued to press their luck, coming up with something so beautiful that we're not sure how GM can say no to production. Vehicle specifics were sketchy, but we did learn that the coupe can be adapted for a diesel engine.

ME WANT!
There was a time when a coupe was a smaller, lighter, and faster machine than its sedan cousin (if it had one).
Seems like these days the sedans are plenty fast, and coupes aren't appreciably lighter. So what's the point?
Give me a fast wagon version. I want more space with my heft, not less.
Uh oh. From this angle it looks more Caddyfied Mercedes C180 than 67 Eldo. I remain skeptical.
hot damn
Hmm doesn't look like a flattering angle. Also, why'd they put on the BMW M wheels?
Diesel Cadillacs?? We really HAVE come full circle...Malaise II is under way.
Oh ya, CTS coupe is cool. Especially if theyre gonna make a V Coupe with the LS9
Bitchin, but they still could have called it Eldorado
Interesting how the front fender changed. The complex metal where the vent blended into the a-pilar is gone.
Good to see someone was able to keep something a surprise.
We're finally getting cars that look like what they told us cars would look like in the future. In the past. So, the future finally is catching up with the past. But it's late. So, it's really the 'past future'.
Ummmm.....better late than never?
Wow, I like it. Give me a CTS-V coupe, please.
Why is the cowl so damn high? From the A-pillar on back is has the Infiniti/350Z look about it.
I see VW Corrado, followed by Nissan Z/G coupes.
That is a great looking car. Well overdue for a coupe version IMO.
I just watched the live feed video on GM tv. The car looks amazing!!! The angle of this picture does not do it justice. (I'm certain more will be available shortly) Additionally, the C pillar treatment is really nice... I want one!
I'm sold.
No seriously, this is very cool. Cool enough to wanna change jobs just to buy it maybe?
@ash78: Yea, I am with you on the space if nothing else sentiment...
That is why I like the STI over the EvoX...close to same experience & uses, but in the STI I can put the back seats down and move crap or let my dogs have some space.
CTS-V couple would be a dream though...
@lemondriver: I think the term you're looking for is retrofuturistic.
Well, alrighty then. Maybe when I turn this one on, it'll return the favor. Very, very nice.
The rear proportions look alittle funny in the pictures but damn that is hot! me likey.
Looks good. Definitely has G37 Coupe proportions in the rear but that is probably ok. Is it a pillarless coupe?
Paleofuture.
Stunning.
Someone better drug-test Caddy engineers. They are hitting homeruns like so many Major League baseballers on anabolic steroids!!!
I don't get it. It looks like a CUV with the huge trucklike front, giant space between front wheel arches and hood, and wierd psuedo hatch rear.
I like how the roofline continues in a single unbroken arc all the way to the trunklid edge. But god help the owner who tries to parallel park, or even see out the back window in that.
When I hear Cadillac Coupe, I think Eldorado. This is looks like an Infinity G35 knockoff.
Where are my tailfins. A proper Caddy Coupe needs tailfins.
Hi everyone,
My name is Doug Wernert and I'm with the GMnext team. If you're interested in talking more about Cadillac's new vehicles revealed at NAIAS on Monday, we're doing two chats Monday afternoon on GMnext.com. From 1-2 p.m., Cadillac Product Manager David Spitzer will chat about the new Provoq fuel cell concept, and from 4-5 p.m., GM Performance Division Director and racecar driver John Heinricy will be on hand to chat about performance validation and the new CTS-V. To enter the chats, go to [www.gmnext.com], sign in and then click on "enter chat." Hope you can join us.
Baby got back!
GM is on a roll and should be a model to follow for Cerebrus and Ford. To all the people who don't get this car you have to see that now America has a domestic competitor to the G37 coupe. I think its too early to start making comparisons to the Germans (Teutonic design seems to be going downhill however).
It looks kinda like the Corrado from the side as someone mentioned but is that really all that bad? I mean the VR6 Corrado was a very fun toy back in the day.
I just hope the magic at Gm trickles down to the rest if the lineup thats hurting like the XLR, which has the potential to shake off the Allante curse if only it was actually beautiful.
If they can make a plain jane Malibu look cool who knows?
Dear GM,
You have actually made a car (other than the Corvette) that I really like! It's like a futuristic '70s Mach1, especially with that rear window!
...but as Franco in The Gumball Rally said,
"And now my friend, the first-a rule of (Italian) driving. *[Franco rips off his rear-view mirror and throws it out of the car]* What's-a behind me is not important.
Needs bull horns on the hood
@Lichtronamo:
"Today's view of yesterday's view of tomorrow" work as one description of post-modernism.
Unfortunately, this vehicle looks so bad from the rear and rear 3/4 as to make it post-attractive.
That high ass-end would be a good place for an "-amino"!
CTS-amino!?!?
@youknowit: A CTS-V Coupe could become the M3's worst nightmare... if done right (manual 6-speed, light, with actual racing credentials, etc.).
This thing is awesome. Cadillac is building better looking cars than BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and all of the Japanese and American manufacturers. What has happened here? No seriously, what is going on?
"Rear visibility? Why the f*ck would you want to go backwards?"
Looks pretty decent, but am I the only one that sees some Aztek in pic #9?
@snep: My thoughts exactly.
@yellofury: This is more like a G35 coupe competitor. Infiniti did away with the harsh angles and razor edges on the G37. No surprises here, they're a step behind, but leave it to GM to make even that look pretty sexy.
Wow, not at all what I was expecting. In my mind, Caddy coupe = flabby Eldorado was a constant, not a variable. I'll need to see this one in flesh before passing judgement on the rear end, I'm still trying to recover from the surprise.
Reminds me of the small V8 Aston, in a really, really good way. Very nice. I'd buy that, especially in V-series trim.
Wow, that is simply stunning.
this might be harder to reverse than a Countach unless it has a camera out the back...Not a bad looking car I suppose but it doesn't make me drool uncontrollably. Probably looks better in person.
Caddy doesn't need to duplicate the dubious sales distinction of the Mercedes C230 hatchback. I think they made this mistake before with the Seville and Eldorado in the late '80s/early '90s.
If you ask me (not that anyone ever did), they need to lengthen the tail to give it a proper trunk instead of the truncated, hatchback-like appearance shown here.
@reefer: I would agree about the rear proportions. It seems that the rear end is too 'fast', perhaps needing more definition instead of disappearing off the end of the trunklid. I'd have to see it in person though, I could see this being a car that looks better than in photos. Good job Cadillac! Looking forward to the V version.
My neighbor is a Caddy dealer and bringing home demo rides all the time. Having seen the 4 door in the flesh, I can say I'd buy the 4 door over the equivalent BMW. If this looks half as good in the flesh as 4 door does, I think I can safely say the same about this new coupe, assuming it's lighter and the performance is at least close.
This will bring an even younger demographic into Cadillacs, which is a good thing. Make a V-coupe version and good ole Caddy will really be shaking and moving!
needs:
Loose the chrome that is one of the heaviest metals out there.
Gain some power and add me some 4 pots all the way around.
It will be hard to keep the dragons away...
Ghetto Booty. Drop that rear end!
That grille looks like it could swallow a car whole if it came up behind you on the highway.
I like that. Does anyone know if it's a hatch (daring) or has a mail-slot trunk lid (boring)? And it's a better G35 knock-off than the Altima Coupe.
SWEEEEEEEEET!
That ASS is HUGE!
So is it the Aztek SS, or are they calling it the Aztek ZR1 now? Oh wait this the CTS coupe... damn, the pic of the rear got me all excited.
CTS J-Lo Edition... coming to your block in 2009!
I like the rear glass, it reminds me of my 73 Gran Torino I used to own; more or less just a skylight but beautiful! Nice job Caddy!
dang.. that has to be one of the greatest look coupes that i can remember.. Holy Crap.. Caddy has come a long way
Two words: thank you
Thank you GM for making a coupe you should have made years ago...maybe its because I'm only 23, but I'm of the opinion that the cts was a sedan built to do a coupes job.
If the pricing is half reasonable, I will trade in my 03 M3 for one of these beauties...in fact the only reason I don't own a cts now is because they haven't offered a two door...so I guess this is proof someones reading my letters!
Well, I like it. Seems like most of the other folks here do too. Now will GM build this or a watered down version. I vote build it. All of it. I WANT the suede steering wheel and a CTS-VC
CTS coupe?
Shouldn't it be a CTC?
(Answer: No, it should be an Eldorado)
Looks good, though. Nicely done.
Approved.
I've always thought the CTS should be a coupe; I hate how the rear door is disproportionate to the front door on the sedan.
