What You See Is What You Get With The Lotus Elise

The Lotus Elise is now a $30,000 car that looks like a rich man's ride. That puts it on a strange border of being an exotic to some, a regular car to others, as Regular Car Reviews will now demonstrate.

Cars with an ethos of lightweight over all else like the Elise have always spoken to me in a very primal way. But I had never thought of the lightweight wonder as a rich man's car until it was pointed out in this video.

If you have a Miata or an S2000, people aren't coming to you to ask for money to fill their gas tanks. They are doing that when you drive the Elise.

But if that doesn't bother you, is there a better car you can buy?

I bought my Porsche Boxster 986 for the price of a Miata. The Boxster is an incredibly fun car that us jalops know isn't a "rich mans" car at all. But, the general public sees that "Porsche" badge and they automatically think you're rich. Gas grifters? I encounter them frequently. I always tell them I can barely afford the gas for my car, let alone theirs—and that's not a lie! More entertaining is when they same people approach me the next week and I tell them "It didn't work last week, it won't work this week either."
