While Audi has cancelled the R8 E-Tron project, Mercedes-AMG just went around the Nordschleife in a record time of 7:56.234 minutes with the electrified SLS. Mission accomplished.
Looking at this bright yellow car go fast, my first thought is that it shouldn't be doing that at all. While many components got lightened compared to the standard car to compensate the extra weight of the batteries, the SLS is still a massive beast. So did the tires like the Nordschleife? Most certainly not.
But it's a war out there, tires are destined to be slayed at some point, and AMG just won a battle with this result. Remember, 7:56 is the time of a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale or a 996 Porsche Turbo around there:
Is the sound of dying tires the most we can expect from future sportwagens? Well, I'm hearing turbos all the way, but completing the lap under 8 minutes proves this technology is also here to stay. Not sure about the color though...
