Potential very bad news for General Motors this afternoon: In addition to being called before Congress, the company will now be the subject of a criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Reuters just filed a brief saying federal prosecutors in New York will examine whether GM is criminally liable for for failing to properly disclose problems with their ignition switches on the Chevrolet Cobalt and other cars.

Thirteen deaths have been linked to that issue. Some 1.4 million cars are now under recall, and court documents have surfaced that show GM knew about the problem for a decade before ordering the recall.
A GM spokesman declined to comment to Jalopnik.
