Toyota’s Hybrid Sales Top 2 Million Worldwide

Toyota has sold more than 2 million hybrids worldwide since launching the Prius in 1997, the company announced today.

The Japanese automaker passed that remarkable milestone just 27 months after seeing cumulative worldwide hybrid sales cross the 1 million mark. The recent push followed rising demand for hybrids in North America and brisk sales of the 2010 Prius in the United States and Japan, where the Prius has been the best-selling car for the past four months.

The ubiquitous Prius led Toyota’s charge, accounting for more than 1.4 million of the 2.01 million gas-electric vehicles the automaker has sold during the past 12 years, the company said in a statement.

Toyota has set an ambitious goal of selling one million gas-electric vehicles annually and expects to sell 600,000 Prius hybrids annually.
