If you follow the usual Internet discussion, Toyota built one rear-drive compact car back in the '80s, and it was called the AE86. But they had more than just the humble Corolla.

The Celica was rear drive up through to the late '80s. While the early '80s Celica is sort of forgotten next to its bigger straight six Supra sister, the littler car can still rip sideways.
