By 1976, the musclecar era had been burnt to a crisp on the triple sacrificial altars of emissions, insurance and economy. Only Pontiac dared install an engine much larger than 400 cubic inches in a midsize or compact car, and that car was the goddamn Trans Am. While we're a sucker for the iconic '77-'78 front end treatment, there's no doubt that with a few modest tweaks, the '76 car could proudly stand as the last in the musclecar line. 30 years after its debut, The Car Connection runs a brief history and gives it a nod of appreciation for standing as strong in the face of legislative peril as it did. The Mustang may still live, but the TA will forever roar in our hearts. Godspeed, you black Firebird. Godspeed.
