This is the speedy young Finnish driver Esapekka Lappi in his Citroën C3 WRC car at the recent Rally Sweden. Yes, he is having one of the more dramatic crashes I can recall, nosing into a snowbank, spinning completely around and backwards, then continuing like nothing happened.
The funny thing about rally drivers is that they would continue even if things had gone much worse. “Press on regardless” is the term of art, and had Lappi crashed down to two and a half wheels, I’m sure he would have pushed to make it to the end of the stage, if not the rally.
But as it was, his car landed spikes down and made it to a pretty fantastic second place finish overall, all things considered.
