The portable GPS unit is yet another cheap, mass-Chinese-produced disposable piece of plastic electronica. Contrast that with this National Geographic "Close-Up U.S.A." map-and-box set from 1978. It has the detailed and thoughtful design of a prop from a Wes Anderson film.

The "Close-Up U.S.A." map set includes 16 separate geographic regions of the United States, each with their own custom cover, and the classic giant NatGeo American map with a Mercator projection (no Robinson for me, thanks). The case is a hard yellow plastic in a style hopelessly duplicated by the Urban Outfitters set. And Helvetica Bold? Gorgeous. I'm in love.
