New 5.0 Mustang Runs Eight-Second 1/4 Mile

The first 2011 Ford Mustangs were delivered this spring. Brand new GTs with a 412 hp 5.0-liter V8 capable of a high 12 second ¼ mile. By October there was a 2011 Mustang four seconds faster.

It takes a certain kind of person to buy a brand new performance car with a warranty and immediately start tearing it apart to make it faster. That kind of person usually has an unlimited bankroll or a race shop. This is a case of the latter. Evolution Performance is a race shop from PA. Being a race shop doesn't make the fact they took 4 seconds off a car's ¼ mile time from spring to fall or being the first 2011 Mustang to run a sub 9 second 1/4 mile any less impressive. The destructive wheelstand content of this video is worth a look even if cars that can't corner aren't your thing. The video actually makes me want a new 2011 Mustang even more (Kona Blue Metallic GT with a 6 speed if anyone is curious).

See, this is the sort of stuff that American cars can do when someone puts their minds to it. I have to say I'm pretty sick of the Top Gear guys belittling our cars. Granted, the quality is not as good, and they're horribly under-tuned, but when it's time to GO, we make a car that'll GO. We're not pushing the limits of metallurgy with our large-displacement engines, and a live-axle isn't so horrible, especially when dealing with a 600+HP engine. For as much high-technology goes into something like an Enzo, I would really be surprised if a Vette couldn't be tooled to outperform, especially if you got the same cash outlay for it.

Eh, rant over. Here's to Bigger Hammer technology.
