Look, McLaren, if you’re going to build a time machine, the key is to make it out of stainless steel. Bare stainless. And put some effort into it, eh? Some gadgets and baubles? Otherwise, it just looks like a plain silver 650S yoinked from Park Place’s back lot.
Let’s be honest, drivers aren’t the best actors, but any excuse for some sweet parking lot donuts in a supercar is fine with me. It’s just such an obvious play to nostalgia that I’d have almost rather not seen a half-thought-out 650S “Back to the Future time machine” and just had three minutes straight of smoky donuts. Less plot, more doughnuts. Is that too much to ask?
What doesn’t make sense plot-wise here is that McLaren drivers Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso are skipping ahead to the first Formula One race of the season. Helloooooo? Am I the only one thinking you’re hopping ahead of all your vital shakedown time? Practice is limited enough in F1 as it is!
Well, there’s one upside to their plan: test driver Kevin Magnussen might actually get some drive time in a real F1 car this year then.
