John Beckett, longtime land-speed racer and member of the Bonneville "200 MPH Club," was killed in an accident this past Sunday, the second day of time trials for the 2005 Bonneville National Speedweek. Beckett had been traveling more than 200mph in his 1930s-era Crosley when the car went out of control and flipped just as he was reaching top speed. A former high-school teacher (the cool one, we'd suspect) was a former president of the East Coast Timing Association, which organizes top-speed races on the Atlantic side of the US. [Thanks to Randy for the tip.]
