But congressman, we're just giving money to people who would have bought a new car anyway.

People are trading in their old cars, so the program is working!

But congressman, do you know for a fact that without the rebate, these people wouldn't have otherwise traded in their old cars when they decided to buy a new car that they were going to buy anyway?

We've shown higher than anticipated participation in the CARS program.

That's great, but why are we destroying functional, late model vehicles, when we could have them replace even older vehicles which pollute more?

Early estimates show that nearly a quarter million clunkers have been traded in toward newer, and more fuel efficient automobiles.

Why shouldn't the traded "clunkers" be available for sale? That would generate more revenue for the dealership, and thus taxable income, and at least partly pay back into the system that funded the rebates.

We are pleased to announce that due to popular demand, we are pushing through additional funding to extend the CARS, or 'Cash For Clunkers" program.

Oh, fuck it.
