Dohs. On the heels of a recall of 2000-2004 Silverado and Sierra pickups for corroded tailgate-support cables, the General's now having to recall 1999-00 trucks for the same reason. Apparently, the galvanized, plastic-coated cables weren't quite as impervious to the elements as GM hoped, rustiing, snapping and causing 84 injuries. The retrofit uses stainless cables. Our '75 El Camino's cables worked just fine. We're not sure what they were made of as it was over a decade and a few too many adult beverages ago, but why don't they just go back to that design? And why don't they bring back the El Camino? [Thanks to Snehal for the tip.]
