Planners in the Philadelphia suburb of Newton Township are betting the solution to aggressive drivers is "Traffic Calming," which places temporary "obstacles" in the road. These "obstacles" are better known to racers as "chicanes."

There's nothing inherently wrong with using urban design to cure problems like drivers speeding through areas where buses drop off kids or pedestrians tend to cross. We're just not sure placing a chicane in the road will do anything other than stun dead-eyed suburban drivers into over-correcting or encourage would-be hoons into taking the chicanes at speed.

A better solution for Newton Township would probably be center island lane narrowing, which also provides a place for people to cross the street, though it's certainly less fun for us. (Hat tip to Socialvegetable.!)
