While Porsche offers an initial factory warranty for repairs, you may want to consider covering your investment long-term with a Porsche extended warranty. But should you get Porsche’s plan or go with a third-party provider for peace of mind?

Porsche’s extended warranty is called Porsche Vehicle Service Protection. There are two levels of protection: the Powertrain Plan and the Platinum Plan. Both contracts provide coverage up to 10 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Porsche’s extended warranty isn’t an additional ten years of coverage past your factory warranty. Instead, it’s in effect at the same time as any manufacturer warranty you may have, giving you ten years of coverage in total.

Porsche Extended Warranty Plans

The Powertrain Plan covers the engine, transmission, drive axle, and seals and gaskets. The Platinum Plan is the more comprehensive of the two, covering the car’s main power systems and brake and shock systems. Both plans use genuine Porsche parts for repairs. Let’s take a closer look at each plan. 

Porsche Platinum Warranty

The Platinum plan is what is commonly known as a bumper-to-bumper warranty. It is the most comprehensive coverage offered by Porsche. In addition to all of the component parts covered by the Powertrain plan, the Platinum plan also provides coverage for Porsche’s vehicle’s climate control, shocks, suspension, fuel system, electrical system, steering, and brakes.

Porsche Powertrain Extended Warranty

The extended Powertrain warranty offered by Porsche is a standard powertrain warranty in comparison with other automakers. This plan covers the engine, transmission, drive axle, engine seals, and gaskets.

In addition to this coverage, a Porsche extended warranty includes:

• 24-hour roadside assistance
• Reimbursement of up to $250 for towing
• Rental car reimbursement of up to $50 per day for up to 10 days due to a covered mechanical breakdown
• Trip interruption coverage of up to $200 per day for up to five days due to a covered mechanical breakdown

Porsche Scheduled Maintenance Plan

In addition to its extended warranties, Porsche offer pre-paid maintenance plans, called the Porsche Scheduled Maintenance Plan (PSMP). This plan allows Porsche owners the ability to pre-pay for routine scheduled maintenance and avoid future inflation-related increases in service costs. There are four plans to choose from. These plans cover the cost of scheduled maintenance like engine oil and filter change, engine air filter replacement, cabin air pollen filet, spark plug replacement, and free multiple-point inspections. Below is a breakdown of the coverage term lengths for each PSMP:

• Plus 1: 2 years/20,000 miles
• Plus 2: 2 years/20,000 miles or 3 years/30,000 miles
• Plus 3: 2 years/20,000 miles, 3 years/30,000 miles, or 4 years/40,000 miles
• Plus 4: 2 years/20,000 miles, 3 years/30,000 miles, 4 years/40,000 miles, or 5 years/50,000 miles

Several factors determine the cost of a Porsche extended warranty including, vehicle mileage, age, coverage and term lengths, and the deductible. Higher coverage levels are generally more expensive. 

Porsche does not have sample contracts or free quotes available on their website. You’ll have to get a quote from a dealership to know the exact cost of a Porsche extended vehicle service contract.

Porsche’s Vehicle Service Protection plans have two deductible options: $100 or $250 per claim. Plans with lower deductibles have higher premiums. However, if you choose the $100 deductible, it’s waived if repairs are performed at the dealership where you bought your vehicle.

If you sell your vehicle to a private party, your Porsche extended warranty is transferable for a $50 fee.

When you purchase a new Porsche, you’re covered for 4 years/50,000 miles through the manufacturer’s warranty. Your new vehicle also comes with the following coverage:

• 2-year warranty on Porsche parts used outside of warranty work
• 2-year/24,000-mile Federal Emission Design and Defects warranty
• 7-year/70,000-mile California Long-Term Emission Control System Defects warranty
• 8-year/80,000-mile Federal Emission Performance warranty
• 12-year warranty against rust in the body panels

Porsche’s limited warranty coverage options also don’t cover routine maintenance services such as changing the oil or adding wiper fluid.

Porsche CPO Warranty

A certified pre-owned (CPO) Porsche comes with a 2-year/unlimited-mile warranty that takes effect once the original warranty period ends, or on the date of sale if that warranty has already ended.

Porsche’s factory warranty includes both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage. Porsche protection plans are exclusionary, meaning repairs are covered unless noted by the company. Here are a few examples of exclusions:

• Normal wear and tear
• Damage from lack of maintenance 
• Batteries damaged from lack of normal use
• Paint damage 
• Air conditioning refrigerant after the first three months of service (unless part of a warranty repair)
• Damage from accidents

Extended warranties from independent warranty companies can give you a similar level of coverage to plans from the manufacturer with more flexibility.

Third-party extended car warranty companies typically let you take your vehicle to any repair facility certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE^®). This opens up thousands of options and doesn’t confine you to a Porsche dealership or other authorized repair facility. You should also note that Porsche extended warranties only last up to 10 years/100,000 miles in total. Some third-party providers, such as Endurance, offer extended warranties for cars with over 100,000 miles.

Additionally, you can get an extended warranty from a third-party provider at almost any point during your ownership. Porsche typically only allows drivers to add extended warranty coverage before the limited factory warranty runs out.

Keep in mind that a third-party warranty does not guarantee the use of genuine Porsche parts or factory-trained technicians. If those factors are important to you, you may be better off with a vehicle service contract from the manufacturer.
