What Does A Porsche Extended Warranty Cover?

Porsche’s extended warranty is called Porsche Vehicle Service Protection. There are two levels of protection: the Powertrain Plan and the Platinum Plan. Both warranties provide coverage up to 10 years/100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Note that Porsche’s extended warranty isn’t an additional 10 years of coverage past your factory warranty. Instead, it’s in effect at the same time as any manufacturer warranty you may have, giving you 10 years of coverage in total.

The Powertrain Plan covers the engine, transmission, drive axle, and seals and gaskets. The Platinum Plan is the more comprehensive of the two, covering the car’s main power systems and brake and shock systems. Both plans use genuine Porsche parts for repairs.

In addition to this coverage, a Porsche extended warranty includes:

    • 24-hour roadside assistance
    • Reimbursement of up to $250 for towing
    • Rental car reimbursement of up to $50 per day for up to 10 days due to a covered mechanical breakdown
    • Trip interruption coverage of up to $200 per day for up to five days due to a covered mechanical breakdown

Porsche’s Vehicle Service Protection plans also come with two deductible options: $100 or $250 per claim. Plans with lower deductibles have higher premiums. However, if you choose the $100 deductible, it’s waived if repairs are performed at the dealership where you bought your vehicle.

If you sell your vehicle to a private party, your Porsche extended warranty is transferable for a $50 fee.

Do You Need Porsche Warranty Coverage?

Porsche was named the second-most dependable brand and the Porsche 911 was named the most dependable model in the J.D. Power 2021 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study℠. However, even the most reliable cars can break down. Before you make any decisions on an extended car warranty, you should check the length of the factory warranty included with your car and consider how long you plan to own the vehicle.

    Porsche Limited Warranty

When you purchase a new Porsche, you’re covered for 4 years/50,000 miles through the manufacturer’s warranty. Your new vehicle also comes with the following coverage:

    • 2-year warranty on Porsche parts used outside of warranty work
    • 2-year/24,000-mile Federal Emission Design and Defects warranty
    • 7-year/70,000-mile California Long-Term Emission Control System Defects warranty
    • 8-year/80,000-mile Federal Emission Performance warranty
    • 12-year warranty against rust in the body panels

A certified pre-owned (CPO) Porsche comes with a 2-year/unlimited-mile warranty that takes effect once the original warranty period ends, or on the date of sale if that warranty has already ended.

Porsche’s factory warranty includes both bumper-to-bumper and powertrain coverage. Porsche protection plans are exclusionary, meaning repairs are covered unless noted by the company. Here are a few examples of exclusions:

    • Normal wear and tear
    • Damage from lack of maintenance
    • Batteries damaged from lack of normal use
    • Paint damage
    • Air conditioning refrigerant after the first three months of service (unless part of a warranty repair)
    • Damage from accidents

Porsche’s limited warranty coverage options also don’t cover routine maintenance services such as changing the oil or adding wiper fluid.

    Porsche Reliability

Porsche is a performance luxury brand that creates dependable cars, according to industry studies. However, all cars can start to break down due to wear and tear.

Annual repairs and maintenance on a Porsche cost an average of $1,192, according to RepairPal. Compare this with a BMW, which averages $968 per year for maintenance and repairs, and Acura, which averages $501. However, repairs can cost more or less depending on your car’s age and condition.

Here are a few repairs that you might encounter with a Porsche 911 (per RepairPal):

    Repair

    Average Repair Cost

    Timing chain tensioner replacement

    $1,231 to $1,503

    Radiator fan motor replacement

    $1,215 to $1,270

    Air conditioning condenser replacement

    $1,090 to $1,191

    Starter replacement

    $1,652 to $1,719

Benefits Of A Third-Party Extended Car Warranty

Extended warranties from independent warranty companies can give you a similar level of coverage to plans from the manufacturer with more flexibility.

Third-party extended car warranty companies typically let you take your vehicle to any repair facility certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE®). This opens up thousands of options and doesn’t confine you to a Porsche dealership or other authorized repair facility. You should also note that Porsche extended warranties only last up to 10 years/100,000 miles in total. Some third-party providers, such as Endurance, offer extended warranties for cars with over 100,000 miles.

Additionally, you can get an extended warranty from a third-party provider at almost any point during your ownership. Porsche typically only allows drivers to add extended warranty coverage before the limited factory warranty runs out.

Keep in mind that a third-party warranty does not guarantee the use of genuine Porsche parts or factory-trained technicians. If those factors are important to you, you may be better off with a vehicle service contract from the manufacturer.

    • What is the cost of a Porsche extended warranty?

Porsche doesn’t publish extended warranty prices online. However, owners on Rennlist.com said they were quoted roughly $4,000 for an 8-year/60,000-mile plan, while others indicated plan costs as high as $6,000.

    • How does a Porsche extended warranty work?

Porsche Vehicle Service Protection is available for new, pre-owned, and certified pre-owned vehicles at the time of purchase or lease. The Porsche extended warranty is also available after a vehicle purchase or lease if the car is still covered under the manufacturer’s new vehicle limited warranty.
