We like nothing better than to see technology originally developed to save polar bears perverted for the purposes of performance. Such is the case with the DDMworks Ariel Atom and its twincharged engine.
Twincharging was originally developed to make tiny little engines like the VW 1.4 TSI perform like a larger, 2.0-liter engine without the poor fuel economy an increase in displacement would bring.
DDMworks has employed the technology to make the 1,375 Lbs Ariel Atom more powerful without sacrificing drivability or throttle response. Starting with the 2.0-liter ECOtec from the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice, DDMworks bolts on a supercharger and a turbocharger, which work in concert to increase power to 430 HP. That gives the Atom a better power-to-weight ratio than either the Ferrari Enzo or Bugatti Veyron for only $6,500 plus an Atom. [DDMworks]
