When WWII broke out many actors, directors, and technicians were drafted into the First Motion Picture Unit, which was used to produce war-related films. The films being made by the army's film office prior to forming the unit were boring and as drab as the olive-colored army uniforms. The films produced by the FMPU included famous actors and directors, such as Jimmy Stewart and Frank Capra, and were a big hit. It's been claimed Winning Your Wings, a film about what it takes to become a pilot, encouraged tens of thousands of men to join the Air Force. More than 400 films were produced by the unit during the war. One creative unit member who became more famous after the war was Theodor Geisel, who is better known by his nom de plume Dr. Suess. According to Scroggs, Dr. Suess and his creations are at war again with the Toyota Prius.
