Although we'd already heard the new Mercedes CLS AMG wouldn't be getting a power boost beyond 514 HP under the hood, now we're not only hearing what it'll officially look like, we're seeing it. Here's the first shots of the new four-door "coupe" from Daimler — helpfully making the rounds on the internet well before the official reveal date of sometime in the indeterminately near future. Noted differences between the old n' busted model and the new hotness pictured above and below the jump are the bigger 19" wheels, new front grille, rear LED lighting and an odd little carbon fiber mini-spoiler. One more pic below the jump.

DISCUSSION

As is usually the case, for some reason photographs of cars are usually underwhelming in some way. It's always small things such as 'the front is too long' or the 'back looks like they ran out of paper space', but in all eventuality, when the item in question is visualized first hand in all its automotive glory, the effect is usually transmogrifying.

The Gallardo is always the 'little brother' until you hear the wail. The Phantom is always an 'overcompensation' until it creeps up on you. The Impreza is beaten with the ugly stick until it beats your brains out with the decidedly brutal but ever so sure-footed stick shift.

The CLS is a design that goes everywhere without getting anywhere. The front looks like it's fromt he orient, the side profile makes it look like someone dropped an elephant on it and the rear looks like a hatchback. The final effect in person is sublime, soothing, smooth and well articulated: Muscle, curves, interest and a sense of presence. At least that's how I felt yesterday when I saw one crawling up to a red light as I was about to cross its menacing path.
