According to Automobile, after the F30 rolls out in 2012, BMW's 3 Series will spawn a fifth bodystyle for the 2013 model year. Enter the BMW 3 Series GT — the fifth horseman of the automotive apocalypse. [Automobile]
I like it. It's much better than a more conventional 3-series hatchback would be (need I remind anyone of the Ti?) and it's less stuffy than a wagon. And honestly, much as might love BMW 3's and 5's, I would never buy a sedan - they just don't make sense to me. I'd much rather have a hatchback and the flexibility to throw some big stuff in the back.
I think this is a good move for BMW. It gives them a distinctive profile and more of the kind of vehicles that people want to buy without degrading the performance. It's a category buster that I think will win out in the long run. Different strokes for different folks - you want your sedan you can still have it, but I'll take an M3GT.
