1975 Jeep Cherokee

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We're up to DOTS Vehicle Number 557, and finally it's a Cherokee!

The original 1974-83 Cherokee was quite a bit more truck-ish than than its SUV Era successors, which meant that you could have your Coleman stove, a rusty toolbox, and some loose cans of beer rattling around in the back and not really notice the racket over the other clanks, squeaks, etc.

I spoke with the owner, who says her Jeep runs very well; as turns out to be the case with so many DOTS vehicle owners, she went to high school with me (sadly, she doesn't remember Hubert The Hatred Bug). The Jeep lives in a great DOTS neighborhood; within a one-block radius, I've photographed this '69 Chevy Nomad, this '67 Volkswagen Transporter, this '66 Mercedes-Benz 200D, this '69 Plymouth Valiant, this '69 Pontiac Tempest, this '66 Mustang, this '77 Honda Accord, and this '70 Mustang.
