You know, I’m kind of glad that Dieselgate didn’t kill off all the cool diesels at Volkwagen. Obviously, the company did a bad thing, so it’s good that it’s now making things right and we’re still getting powerful diesel engines in its SUVs while it does. Like the new Touareg V8 TDI. Who wants to tow some stuff with this?

Right off the bat, Volkswagen assures us that the new car “also complies with the Euro 6d-TEMP emission standard.” Phew! Thank you VW for clarifying that one.

Under the hood is a 4.0-liter turbodiesel that makes about 416 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. It’ll hit 62 mph from a standstill in a claimed 4.9 seconds, which is impressive from something roughly the size of a house.

I know it’s not quite as awesome as the VW Touareg V10 TDI, but I’ll take a big-ass diesel engine any day of the week, even if it doesn’t have 10 cylinders. This will be the automaker’s flagship vehicle and will hit markets by May’s end. Don’t count on it coming stateside, though, because the Touareg is dead in America.

Just wear your damn mask...

There is a little bit of a masochist in me that would love to have one of those V10 TDI Touaregs, just to tinker with.
