The Catch-22 About Porsche's Electronic Trunks

Illustration for article titled The Catch-22 About Porsches Electronic Trunks

Porsche 996s have electronically-locked trunks. If the battery dies, you can't open the trunk. To jump start the battery, you must open the trunk. See the catch-22 here?

Thankfully, there is a way around this wonderful exhibition of superior German automotive design.

The whole process is detailed on the real estate blog of Denver's Perry and Co. You should see the whole thing right here for the accompanying photographs, but I'll put in the important details here.

Basically, you open the door with your key, then open up the fuse box in the driver's side footwell. Then you hook up your jumper cables right to the fuse box and the door lock. This will set off the alarm. It also lets you open up the engine cover and that lets you get access to two terminals for jump starting the car, even thought the battery is in the front trunk. Jump start the car, and then you're good to go.

Sometimes, I just love, love, love Porsche engineers.

How about jump starting a McLaren 12C if the battery dies? Electronic trunks, electronic doors, what to do? A guide:

1) reach your hand in the driver's side scoop, all the way in the back.

2) stick your finger in the hole back there, and bend back that panel. You will need to bend approximately 90 degrees, 15 degrees or so past where you're sure this panel will snap in half.

3) Take the key apart, there is a 1" key inside the fob

4) there is a key hole underneath the panel you just removed, stick it in there.

5) press down on the door, hard, and turn the key. The door will pop up. When the battery dies, the last thing that's supposed to happen is the windows will drop down a bit, so you can open the door this way without power. If the windows don't drop down, the window will explode when you open the door. Ask which one happened to me.

5) Now that you've gotten the door open and there is glass all over the place, vaccuum up the glass, then open the trunk with the handle in the footwell

6) Remove all the plastic trim in the trunk area.

7) With a power screwdriver, remove 18 screws holding the trunk carpeting in place around the perimiter of the trunk

8) Remove the weatherstripping, and the trunk carpeting

9) Underneath the carpeting, you find the battery. Connect the booster box to the battery.

10) Start the car. You must leave the car running with the booster box still connected for at least 10 minutes or the car will not run. You're going to want to have a topped-off booster box for this.

11) Reassemble the entire trunk, asking yourself the whole time why you didn't just buy a Porsche in the first place.
