A friend wrote us after last week's Motor Press Guild track day at Willow Springs outside of Los Angeles and said of the new Z06: "Holy Shitstorm! If GM had a fleet of cars like that one they would be in decent shape." But they don't. And even the Z06 sounded to our operative as if it was suffering from an exhaust leak. Still, the Detroit Free Press' Mark Phelan feels compelled to leap to GM's defense in the wake of today's announced cuts.

And while he makes some decent points, we think he's giving GM's current new cars too much credit. Praising the Malibu for its milage, after all, still doesn't mean that it's not two-bag ugly and suddenly in Accord/Camry refinement/reliablity/performance territory. Until GM gets there, they're not out of the woods.

Don't bury GM yet: It has the vehicles for recovery
